This is part of a larger image, used to tell the story of how the hand drum, known as the Tabla, found its origins. According to the story, two sisters spent their summers sifting grain in their father’s wheat fields in the Middle East. One day it was very hot, and one of the sisters became very frustrated and tired, and slammed on her grain sieve. The sisters marveled at the magnificent sound. From then on, drumming their sieves served a way to make the work in the fields a little more tolerable. Soon afterward, all the workers were drumming their sieves. The drawing started by scanning a wood board, and then scanning pastel drawings. This created an interesting effect, especially in the complete drawing, where the knot in the wood is placed to represent the sun.
